A Message from our President
President, 2015 - 2017
Welcome to the revamped website of the Waterloo Region Law Association. I hope that you will find it easier to use, and that it will help you stay on top of the events planned throughout the year. You will also find information about our current board of trustees, contact information for our members and job postings in the region.
The Waterloo Region Law Association is thriving and our membership is growing. Currently we have approximately 585 lawyer and paralegal members from Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge and the townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.
As our community grows and the demands on the legal profession continue to increase, the Waterloo Region Law Association aims to provide a wide range of continuing professional development opportunities for our members. I invite you to join and attend our practice groups. Currently, we have practice groups focusing on Corporate Law, Real Estate, Estates, Family Law, International Law and Criminal Law. The practice groups meet several times over the course of the year and are a wonderful way to discuss issues relevant to your practice with your colleagues, and to learn about new aspects of law that you may not be aware of. Attendance at these groups is included with your membership fee.
In order to maintain the collegiality of the bar, the Waterloo Region Law Association plans several social events during the year and we encourage all members to attend. Our social events include the Opening of the Courts, the Golf Tournament, the Annual General Meeting and a monthly meeting of the Shade’s Mill Law Association. Lawyers and Paralegals who are new to the region or who are just beginning their careers, are invited to attend our monthly pub nights. The pub nights typically occur on the first Thursday of the month and rotate among local establishments.
We have been working hard to improve our library collection and as such we have added many books, periodicals, online programs and precedents to assist you. We encourage our members to use our library, located at the Waterloo Region Consolidated Courthouse, as a practice resource centre. Our librarian, Catherine and our library assistant Amanda are always happy to help. While they are not able to provide legal advice, they will do their best to help you find the resources you require for your practice. I also encourage you to take advantage of our lawyers’ lounge. It is a great meeting and work spot, and can be set up for webinars, meetings or CPD programs. Please contact the library should you wish to take advantage of this service.
On behalf of your board of trustees, I welcome you to our new website and I encourage you to explore it to find out all that the Association has to offer. Should you have any questions or concerns, I welcome you to contact me. I will do my utmost to assist you.
