Art in the Library - New Show November 2011!

 "Coastal Dignity"
Paintings from Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland

Gros is "large" in French; Morne means small rounded hills or somber/gloomy

This collection of paintings and drawings from Gros Morne Park is the result of three years of planning, eighteen days of "on site" painting, photographing, taking notes and soaking up the beauty of Newfoundland. The group of artists who travelled to Gros Morne from the Guelph/Elora area is comprised of Laura Coutts, Leslie Miles, Janet Ollers, Scott Abbott, Barry Hodgson and Joel Masewich.  The art currently displayed in the Law Library was created from hard work, spectacular settings and hours spent outdoors, painting 'en plein air'. "We began our painting odyssey at Winterhouse Brook, near the Discovery Centre, where we attended a lecture by the renowned Canadian painter, Christopher Pratt. His talk on 'the respect and dignity' that is Newfoundland set the high watermark for quality in our work. Such an inspiration for six artists dropped on "the pond"!

"Newfoundland left us in a state of wonder and awe. All of us have experiences to share... art discussions over dinner, ranging from the controversial to the inane, much laughter and tough critiques of each others' work".

Newfoundland returned an adventure of visual moments these artists will never forget. Part of "Coastal Dignity", the larger group exhibit held at the Wellington County Museum and Archives, these fifteen paintings are on display and available to purchase at the Waterloo Law Association Law Library through November and December 2011.
