    New Licensee and Law Student Courthouse
    and Law Library Orientation Tour

    When: Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.

    Where: Waterloo Region Courthouse, 85 Frederick St. Kitchener

    Please join us for a tour of the Waterloo Region Courthouse and the WRLA Law Library and learn answers to commonly heard questions such as:

    • How do I find out what room my Motion will be heard in?
    • How do I address the judicial officer?  
    • How do I sign in?
    • Where do I go to file documents?
    • Is there a place for me to do work during the lunch break / recess?
    • Where can I put my gown on?
    • What resources are available in the library?

    During the tour you will be able to speak to and ask questions of:

    • Judges 
    • Trial coordinators;
    • Counter Services;
    • Lawyers and paralegals;
    • Library staff;
    • and other justice sector professionals

    This tour is limited to new licensees (called 5 years or less), law students, and paralegal students.

    Please join us in the Lawyers' Lounge after the tour for the Summer Social. The summer social is a great opportunity for law students and new lawyers and paralegals to meet and network. Drinks and snacks will be provided. 

    The schedule is as follows:

    1:00 – Registration in the foyer of the courthouse 

    1:15 – Introductions 

    1:20 - 2:50 - Tour of the courthouse

    2:50-3:30 - Tour and orientation of the law library

    3:30-6:00 - Summer Social in the Lawyers' Lounge

    Opening of the Courts Ceremony 

    The Opening of the Courts traditionally marks the start of a new year in the legal community and courthouse, and is a great opportunity for members of the judiciary, licensees and students to meet, socialize and hear about what is new in the jurisdiction of Waterloo Region.

    The Opening of the Courts will take place in the Crystal Ballroom at the Walper Hotel  on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

    This year, the WRLA is pleased to announce  five WRLA members will be awarded with the Legend of the Profession award during the Opening of the Court Ceremony. The Legend of the Profession award will be awarded to:

    • Irwin Duncan
    • Richard Haalboom
    • George Ingram
    • Peter Madorin
    • Edmund Wellhauser

    State of Courts Addresses by the Local Administrative Justices of the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice at 6:00 p.m. followed by the award ceremony for the Legend of the Profession. 

    Complementary hor d'oeuvres will be accompanied by a cash bar. Attendance for this event is free.
