Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, women judges throughout the country have lost their jobs, had their lives threatened and have been forced to evacuate or go into hiding. Members of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) assisted these women to flee the country in dangerous circumstances. Thirty-seven of the Afghan women judges came to Canada as government-sponsored refugees. Judge Nazira Safi arrived in Kitchener in February 2023.
Please join Justice Catrina Braid as she discusses with Judge Safi about life in Afghanistan before 2021; how and why she became a judge; the security risks of being a woman judge in Afghanistan; her escape from Afghanistan and her future plans in Canada.
Registration is required to receive the instructions to sign into the session.
