In April 2024, Lexis Nexis published The Right Not to Remain Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in the Legal Profession. The unique book shines a light on how mental health is perceived within the profession and beyond. This groundbreaking book is a compilation of 18 chapters, mostly authored by members of the legal community who have navigated their careers while managing mental health challenges. The authors address and destigmatize the insidious nature of mental health and isolation in the legal community and beyond. They also offer solutions to how to improve the mental well-being of legal professionals. The Right Not to Remain Silent is one of the most popular books in the history of LexisNexis. It can be found in law schools, libraries and law offices across Canada. It can also be found at Harvard, Yale, Berkely and the Library of Congress. An American edition was recently published.
Beth Beattie and Courtney Wilson are two of the contributing authors to The Right Not to Remain Silent. They share their stories of living with bipolar disorder and an eating disorder respectively. They provide insights into the stigma they have faced and overcome. They provide practical tips on how to meaningfully address mental health issues in legal workplaces.
